Why?
The American Indians lived in shelters because they didn’t have the materials to live or build a house. They wanted to have a roof over their head in order for them to be comfortable. They don’t want to use tents or live outside where it is cold. Has somewhere to put there stuff where no one can steal that easily.
They feel more safe because they have walls to protect them. When they sleep they won’t hurt their backs. If they sleep on the grass they can have so much pain on their neck and their back. People or things won’t be able to find them more easily because of the walls covering them.
They live in shelters because they want to have a roof over there head so when it rains they won't get wet. Also so if it hails they won't hurt there head or any other body part. They got shelters because if they didn't they could have gotten stuff stolen because it was easier to see the stuff they have. They didn't want people disturbing them by just looking at them.
